I am Pamela. I am a new advocate for the Illinois Valley Safe House Alliance. I grew up in Cave Junction most my life and also lived in Wisconsin. I’ve been all over the U.S. on road trips and even to Australia. I believe if you put your mind to wanting something eventually it will happen, you just have to be willing to put in the time and effort.
Eventually, I moved away to go to college at Southern Oregon University. I continued living in Medford, OR for job stability, because Cave Junction did not have much to offer for employment. But I always knew I wanted to come back, I just did not think it would ever happen. I graduated SOU with a BS in Psychology in 2010. During college I volunteered in Medford at Community Works for Sexual Assault victims for about three years. I had not really known yet what I wanted to do with my degree until I worked with a few victims and decided I really wanted to help in this field to give back, since I myself was a victim.
At 5 years old I was a victim of child molestation, by my Great Grandfather. My family was in a rough patch and he took us in. Having my parents to be there for me and taking the right steps to getting me the help I needed to be who I am today, is something I am very thankful for. I know what it’s like to be blamed for something I had no control over nor knew why it was happening. The reason I wanted to be an advocate is because if no one else around believes the person at least I can be the one person to be there to believe in them.
